In areas like Kalamazoo County, meth is so prevalent that it has been dubbed the meth capital of the U.S.. However, some labs still exist in America and are responsible for some of the meth being dealt on the streets or sold online. Many of these labs are located in other countries like Mexico and the meth is trafficked into the U.S. illegally. Historically, meth was even distributed during World War II to enhance soldier alertness—evidence of its deep and dangerous roots. Long-term use has been linked to severe health problems, neurological decline, and death.

Fewer busts of labs does not mean that the county has shed its reputation.

Mexican DTOs and criminal groups are the dominant producers of methamphetamine in California, Mexico, and southwestern states. Most ofthe toxic residue from methamphetamine production is dumped in the local area,killing vegetation and contaminating water supplies and soil. Methamphetamine laboratories create 5to 7 pounds of toxic waste for every pound of methamphetamine produced. Many methamphetamine abusers andproducers also commit crimes such as spousal abuse and child neglect. Nonetheless, thenumber of federal sentences involving methamphetamine in Florida increaseddramatically from 65 in FY1997 to 106 in FY2001. DEA reported that methamphetaminetypically sold for $70 to $100 per gram and $250 per one-eighth ounce (8-ball)statewide during that period.

It is expected that drug traffickers are sending bulk shipments of meth straight to North Carolina from Mexico. The top counties in Indiana with meth lab seizures were Delaware, Vigo, Knox, Bartholomew, and Jackson. Opioids are a much larger problem in New York and usually take the headlines over methamphetamine.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), an estimated 2.6 million people in the United States reported using meth in the past year . Nationally, methamphetamine use has been on the rise for the past decade. While tourists flock to its shores for picture-perfect vacations, a significant portion of the state’s population grapples with the devastating effects of meth abuse. The group plans to start a recovery house for methamphetamine addicts and a new court-ordered methamphetamine class, Combee said.

Most of Tennessee’s meth is brought in from Mexico in large bulk quantities. Although Tennessee has the eighth-highest number of meth seizure incidents, the overall number of seizures has decreased by 80% since 2010. A majority of meth overdoses in Philadelphia also involved an opioid, usually fentanyl.

Methamphetamine is frequently abused in rural areas in Florida,and is increasingly abused in suburban and metropolitan areas. Methamphetamine poses a serious and increasing threat to Florida and is a major public health problem in some areas of the state. In 2021, 32,537 people died from an overdose involving psychostimulants, according to CDC data. It can cause extreme weight loss, addiction, and severe dental problems, anxiety, changes in brain structure and function; memory loss; sleeping problems; paranoia; violent behavior; and hallucinations. It was developed in the early 20th century from its parent drug, amphetamine and used in decongestants and bronchial inhalers. “A few decades ago, most of the meth consumed in the U.S. came from domestic producers utilizing more straightforward synthesis routes but at much smaller scales, often using ephedrines from cold medications.

Because of the drug’s high potential for misuse, it is rarely prescribed for these treatments and is prescribed in very low doses. Furthermore, California and Texas, two border states have the highest number of users, which suggests there is a link between the flow of drugs and states with the most users. Mexican criminal groups and local independentdealers as well as Hispanic gang members usually distribute methamphetamine atopen-air drug markets and on street corners. Federal,state, and local law enforcement officials report that Mexican criminal groupsoften hire male Mexican couriers, but Caucasian females are used at anincreasing rate because they are believed to attract less attention from lawenforcement officials. Many local officials in northern and central Florida report having seized more methamphetamine laboratories in 2002 than in any prior year. Children, law enforcement personnel, and local residentsincreasingly are exposed to the dangers posed by the explosive and toxicchemicals used to produce methamphetamine. The percentage of drug-related federal sentences in Floridainvolving methamphetamine was significantly lower than the national percentageeach year from FY1997 through FY2001.

Over 527kilograms of drugs, primarily cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, were seized onFlorida roadways as part of Operation Pipeline in 2001. In 2001 the Florida Legislature authorized the creation of a3-year pilot program in Orange County to intercept illicit drugs sent viapackage delivery services. Many of these conveyances also are used to transport illicit drugs from Florida to other states and cities–particularly New York and Atlanta–that serve as major transportation hubs and distribution centers for various illicit drugs. Drug transporters frequently use maritime vessels, commercial and private aircraft, and package delivery services to smuggle illicit drugs into Florida. This ethnic diversity, coupled with a high population density, allows members of Colombian, Dominican, Mexican, Jamaican, and other foreign drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) and criminal groups to blend easily with law-abiding members of the community.

Nearly 1 million people in the U.S. are affected, and meth’s growing reach into rural areas is increasing the risk for vulnerable communities. Michigan, often labeled the meth capital of the world, logged 220 meth-related incidents and is frequently asked about in searches like what is the meth capital of the U.S.?
